Introduction

Inflammation of the central nervous system (CNS) results in multifocal neurological disease. The CNS is generally protected from systemic inflammation by the blood-brain-barrier (BBB), but when the inflammation is directed at the BBB or an inflammatory process is initiated from within the CNS, the protective mechanisms of the BBB become dysfunctional and may become part of the inflammatory process.
