LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of the module candidates will be able to:

  • Discuss the most important characteristics of the virus that causes rabies.
  • Describe the epidemiology of rabies.
  • Describe the pathogenesis of rabies.
  • List the clinical signs that will support a provisional diagnosis of rabies and the derivation of an informed differential diagnosis list.
  • Explain how to confirm a diagnosis of rabies in animals by means of collection, preservation and transport of appropriate specimens, and requesting the relevant laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis.
  • Explain how to formulate prevention and control strategies for rabies with the aid of knowledge of the aetiology and epidemiology.
  • Discuss the socio-economic effects of rabies.

ASSESSMENT

Delegates will be expected to complete a multiple choice quiz and must obtain 80% to qualify for the CPD points.
