Introduction

Chocolate toxicosis is one of the most common causes of dog poisoning reported although many species are susceptible including cats, rabbits and rodents. Deaths have also been reported in livestock-fed cocoa byproducts and animals consuming mulch from cocoa bean hulls. Seasonal celebrations such as Valentine’s Day, Easter and Christmas create tempting opportunities as owners have more chocolate products available for these special events. At least 20 % of all chocolate poisoning cases are diagnosed and treated in December.
