Histophilus somni (previously Hemophilus somnus, Histophilus ovis and Histophilus agnii) is an important and common pathogen of cattle, particularly feedlot animals and animals grazed under semi-intensive conditions, as well as being reported less frequently in small ruminants, bighorn sheep and bison. Disease syndromes which have been associated with this bacterium include septicaemia, thromboembolic meningoencephalitis (TEME), bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex, myocarditis and reproductive disease complex.
