Ionophores have been used for many years in the livestock and poultry industries for improved feed efficiency and for the control of coccidiosis. Applications of ionophores in cattle include improved feed efficiency, increased rate of weight gain, and the prevention and control of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria bovis and Eimeria zuernii, the most pathogenic of the bovine coccidia and frequently associated with significant mortality rates. Other reported beneficial effects of ionophores in bovines include decreased incidence of ruminal bloat, rumen acidosis, and acute respiratory distress syndromes “fog fever”.
