Introduction

Anipedia provides the opportunity to get updated information on African swine fever (ASF). Given the recent outbreak of ASF in the Amatola district of the Eastern Cape Province this is a particularly topical subject.

The comprehensive, quality assured, and up-to-date course materials have been developed by Prof Mary-Louise Penrith, who is a world-renowned scientist and expert on ASF, and co-authors all with a wealth of experience and knowledge on the disease.

This course gives a lucid exposition of both historical and recent outbreaks of ASF in countries in Africa and western and eastern Europe and the socio-economic consequences of these outbreaks. Furthermore, it points out and discusses the different epidemiological cycles in the maintenance of ASF virus in Africa (warthog-tick, domestic pig-tick, and domestic pig cycles) and in non-African countries (domestic pig-tick, domestic-sylvatic, and wild boar-environment cycles). The sources of ASF outbreaks and control/prevention options are also emphasized

The management of Anipedia is aware that this is a large and comprehensive course and therefore it has been divided into 4 modules each with its own questions and the tests.

Who Should Enrol

Veterinary, para-veterinary and allied animal and human health professionals and students.

Course Highlights

This online CPD course has been designed to provide easy access to updated scientific information on African swine fever (ASF) for a wide range of learners with different interest in the disease. The course materials have been developed by Prof Mary-Louise Penrith, Extraordinary Professor, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, South Africa - a world-renowned scientist and expert on ASF, and co-authors all with a wealth of experience and knowledge on the disease.

Particular features or highlights of this course are that it gives a lucid exposition of both historical and recent outbreaks of ASF in countries in Africa and western and eastern Europe including the recent outbreaks in Russia and China and the socio-economic consequences of these outbreaks. The sources of ASF outbreaks and control/prevention options are also emphasized.

To make this comprehensive course more “digestible” for learners it has been divided into 4 modules and the tests do not include questions on virological and molecular details of the structure and function of the virus or details of the pathogenesis, immunology and diagnostic tests.

The learner will be able to study and complete the course materials and online tests at his/her own pace.

Learning Outcomes

After completion of the course the learner will have a sound knowledge of ASF and will be able to:

  • Understand and discuss the most important features of the aetiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, pathology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and control/prevention of ASF.
  • Point out the differences and similarities in the epidemiological cycles of ASF virus maintenance at play in African and non-African countries, sources of outbreaks and different control/prevention measures that are applicable in endemic versus non-endemic situations.
  • Understand the socio-economic importance of ASF under different farming systems.
  • Discuss the differential diagnosis for ASF.
  • Explain the collection, storage and shipment of specimens for diagnostic purposes and will have a basic understanding of the different diagnostic tests that are applicable to confirm ASF in both live and dead animals.
  • Formulate prevention/ control/ eradication strategies that can be applied in endemic versus epidemic situations of ASF.

Assessment

All modules have multiple-choice tests.
