Course Highlights
This online CPD course has been designed to provide easy access to updated scientific information on lumpy skin disease (LSD) for a wide range of learners with interest in the disease.
Lumpy skin disease can be considered a ‘neglected disease’, because since it was first confirmed as a poxvirus infection in South Africa in 1944, research has been limited. Until recently, LSD was not a research priority for developed countries because it was exotic. Consequently, there are still gaps in information about the disease. Particular features or highlights of this course are that it gives a lucid exposition of both historical and recent outbreaks of LSD in countries in Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Balkans and Caucasus, and the socio-economic consequences of these outbreaks. Furthermore, it points out the most effective control measures in endemic (e.g. African countries) versus epidemic (e.g. European countries) situations.
The learner will be able to study and complete the course material and online test at his/her own pace.
Learning Outcomes
After completion of the course the learner will have a sound knowledge of LSD and will be able to:
- understand and discuss the most important features of the aetiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, pathology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and control/prevention of LSD.
- point out the differences and similarities of the control or prevention measures that are applicable in endemic versus non-endemic situations.
- understand the socio-economic importance of LSD under different farming systems.
- discuss the differential diagnosis for LSD.
- explain the collection, storage and shipment of specimens for diagnostic purposes and will have a basic understanding of the different diagnostic tests that are applicable to confirm LSD in both live and dead animals.
- formulate prevention or control strategies that can be applied in endemic versus epidemic situations of LSD.
Assessment
Some of the modules will have a multiple-choice test, while others are read for information.
