Introduction

Anipedia provides the opportunity to get updated information on coronavirus infections in livestock.

In livestock coronaviruses generally cause acute infections of the respiratory and/or enteric tracts and transmission occurs mainly by the faecal-oral or respiratory routes.

In pigs the coronaviruses of transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE), porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED) and porcine deltacoronavirus infections in neonatal piglets affect exclusively the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) causing severe diarrhoea and a very high mortality rate. In contrast, porcine respiratory coronavirus (a mutant derived from TGE virus) lost its affinity/tropism for the GIT, resulting in highly contagious subclinical respiratory infections. The haemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus affects both the central nervous (encephalomyelitis) and respiratory systems.

Bovine coronavirus infect cattle and sheep as well as a wide range of European and North American wild ruminants. In cattle, it causes neonatal calf diarrhoea, winter dysentery in adult cattle and contributes to the multifactorial bovine respiratory disease complex.

Course Highlights

This online CPD course provides access to updated scientific information on diseases/infections of livestock species caused by coronaviruses. After completion of the course the learner will have a sound knowledge and will be able to point out the differences and similarities between these diseases/infections. The course materials have been written by distinguished Prof Linda Saif, Ohio State University, USA, who is a world-renowned scientist on coronaviruses in animals, and co-authors from the same university and from China.

The learner will be able to study and complete the course materials and online tests at his/her own pace.

Learning Outcomes

Candidates will be able to:

  • Understand and discuss the most important features of the aetiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, pathology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and control/prevention of the diseases/infections caused by coronaviruses in livestock.
  • Explain in particular the differences in host range, tropism for different organ or tissue systems (e.g. gastrointestinal and/or respiratory tracts), main transmission routes (e.g. faecal-oral and/or respiratory routes), socioeconomic importance, and disease syndromes caused by the coronaviruses in livestock.
  • Discuss the differential diagnosis for the different coronavirus diseases/infections.
  • Explain the diagnostic options for coronavirus diseases/infections in both live and dead animals.
  • Formulate prevention, control/eradication strategies for diseases/infections caused by coronaviruses in livestock.
